Anderson story.) Hilda Hopperstad (1878-1920) raised 4 children in Enderlin, ND. Anon (1881-1935) farmed in Bowman Co., ND, and is buried in Scranton. He had 2 daughters. Arthur (1882-1957) raised 3 children near Cresco, and is buried in Orleans Church Cemetery. Anne Kjorlien lived in Devils Lake and Fargo, ND, and is buried in Minneapolis. She had 3 children. Walter (1892-1938) lived and worked in Cresco, and is buried at Oak Lawn Cemetery, Theodore (1883-1956) had 6 children and farmed in Fremont Twp. His son, Erlin Anderson, is the only descendant of Charles and Karen born in Winneshiek Co. who still resides there.

Andrew Carleton Anderson was born 27 Apr 1909 and died 17 Nov 1976. His parents were Andrew and Caroline (Moe) Anderson of Frankville Twp. Their children went to the Pagin School and the Norwegian School. The children were confirmed in Norwegian in the Glenwood Lutheran Church. Carleton "Carle” moved to Decorah and graduated from Decorah High School. He especially enjoying refinishing antiques and woodworking, making several desks, chests, bookcases, grandfather clocks, coffee tables and furniture for his granddaughter. He worked for Bensch and Brandt Furniture where he became a junior partner after World War II. After leaving the furniture business, he enjoyed his work in the maintenance department at Luther College.

Carle had two brothers and three sisters: Oscar, Cornelius, Esther, Charlotte and Emelia. (See Andrew and Caroline (Moe) Anderson story.)On 14 Feb 1947 Carle married Dorothy Anita Welper in Decorah, IA. Dorothy was born 3 Apr 1917 on a farm near Ridgeway and reared in Decorah. Carle and Dorothy made their home in Decorah. In September 1935 Dorothy attended Decorah College for Women, which joined Luther College in January 1936. She graduated from a two-year kindergarten course in 1938 from Iowa State Teacher's College (now the University of Northern Iowa) at Cedar Falls. While teaching she took summer and evening courses at Luther College, University of California, Los Angeles and correspondence courses from the University of Iowa. She graduated from Luther College in 1969. Dorothy’s profession before her marriage was teaching in Winneshiek Co., Greene and Decorah and service with the American Red Cross at the Karachi Air Base in India during World War II. In 1961 she returned to teaching at the Howard-Winneshiek Schools in Ridgeway, and retired after 30 plus years of teaching. She received a 50-years pin in O.E.S. (Order of the Eastern Star), belongs to D.A.R. (Daughters of the American Revolution), VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Auxiliary, N.E.A. (National Education Association), Porter House Museum (life member), Oneota Riverview Care Facility Auxiliary, A.A.R.P (American Association of Retired Persons), W.C.A.R.S.P(Winneshiek Co. Assoc, of Retired School Personnel), Vesterheim Museum, Community Concerts and RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program). Dorothy also is active in the Congregational Church, Luther College Woman’s Club and Decorah Genealogy Association. She received the Winneshiek Co. Pioneer’ Certificate from Decorah Genealogy Association, since her great grandfather was Erastus Andrus. (See Eratus and Abigail Andrus story.)

Dorothy has 3 sisters and three brothers. Her sisters are Gail Ode, Viola Hertges and Luella Dale. Her brothers are Jesse, Walter and Percy. (See Joseph Elmer Wepler story.)

Dorothy and Carle had a special experience in 1963 when they went with the Luther College Concert Band to Europe. They especially enjoyed their week in Norway with the three families their daughter Dee Ann had visited while with the first Valders Exchange Students Program. The next two weeks they visited the countries that Carle served in with the 8th Armored Division during World War II.
